Criminals were wily back in 1904 but they were no match for Spot, the canine who patrolled the St. Clair County Jail in Belleville.
Sheriff G.W. (George Washington) Thompson, lauded the bull terrier named Spot who actually belonged to workhouse superintendent Andrew Schaefer, for keeping prisoners from escaping in Belleville.
The dog's exploits graced the front page of the Belleville Daily Advocate, not just once, but twice.
Late in January, after a heavy snowstorm, Spot was along on a work detail from the county workhouse. He was the only assistant Schaefer said he needed to keep order among a large party of workers.
